Joanne Chang
PIANIST
Pianist Dr. Joanne Chang, a native of Ipoh, Malaysia is a soloist, chamber musician, educator, and administrator whose performances and presentations have taken her around the world. Her debut album, Díalogos: A Collection of Mexican Chamber Music for Violin and Piano, was released and sponsored by the Latin American Music Center at Indiana University in 2018. Described for her captivating and poetic musical interpretations, Joanne has performed at distinguished programs including the Dame Myra Hess Concert Series, WFMT’s Fiesta Latin America, WQXR’s Young Artist Showcase, Music Academy of the West, International Menuhin Music Academy, Hidden Valley Festival of Winds, Heartbeat Opera, Music Teachers National Association, Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and the National Youth Orchestra of China. An active chamber musician, Joanne has performed with musicians of The Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
An dedicated educator, Joanne is on faculty at Manhattan School of Music’s Vocal Arts and Collaborative Piano department, and piano faculty at the 92NY and Nightingale-Bamford School. She is staff pianist at The Juilliard School’s vocal and instrumental areas, keyboard substitute at the New York Philharmonic, and guest pianist at Hidden Valley Festival of Winds. Previously, Joanne has served on the faculty teaching staff at The Juilliard School, Special Music School, Western Illinois University, University College Sedaya International, Florida State University, Camp Encore/Coda, and as Program Assistant/Associate Instructor in Piano at Indiana University.
An active educator and administrator, Joanne served as Chair at the 2022 MTNA National Conference Pedagogy Saturday for Young Professionals. In 2019, Joanne founded the Indiana University MTNA Collegiate Chapter and has presented topics at the MTNA State and National Conferences. From 2025-26, Joanne was Senior Manager of Teaching Artist Training at the Harmony Program (NYC) and currently Fundraising Coordinator for Vision Possible Charity Concerts.
Joanne completed her doctorate in Piano Performance and Literature from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, with minors in Music Theory and Arts Administration. Joanne’s doctoral research document “The Bridge to Modernism: Franz Liszt and the Late Piano Music” (2021) explores the connection of the composer’s late piano works with music of the early 20th century.
Joanne is a graduate of The Juilliard School (Kovner Fellow), Indiana University, Florida State University, and Kent State University. Her teachers include Jonathan Feldman, Karen Shaw, Menahem Pressler, Read Gainsford, and Jerry Wong. A seasoned solo and chamber musician, educator, and administrator, Joanne is based in New York City and maintains an active teaching and performing schedule.
